HANNOVER (HANNOVER MESSE) AND SAN FRANCISCO – April 24, 2017 – The Linux Foundation today announced the launch of EdgeX Foundry, an open source project to build a common open framework for Internet of Things (IoT) edge computing and an ecosystem of interoperable components that unifies the marketplace and accelerates enterprise and Industrial IoT. The initiative is aligned around a common goal: the simplification and standardization of Industrial IoT edge computing, while still allowing the ecosystem to add significant value.
IoT is delivering significant business value by improving efficiencies and increasing revenue through automation and analytics, but widespread fragmentation and the lack of a common IoT solution framework are hindering broad adoption and stalling market growth. The complexity of the current landscape and the wide variety of components creates paralysis. EdgeX solves this by making it easy to quickly create IoT edge solutions that have the flexibility to adapt to changing business needs.
In the next year, smart building applications such as HVAC, lighting and other environmental systems, are expected to lead the overall IoT market as a result of increased connectivity and reduced device cost, according to Gartner. Building managers looking to implement smart and connected solutions across a number of structures, such as offices, retail spaces, sporting arenas and high-scale luxury apartments, are eager to gain real-time insights that can help them increase energy efficiency, lower maintenance and improve the tenant experience.
In fact, a truly Smart Building implementation requires integration of several systems together and delivers seamless experiences to its tenants and facilities managers. Example, if a Smart Lighting, HVAC system and a room finder application all need room occupancy information, each vendor implements their own solution to create information from the same data object or sensor.
BASSG has just open sourced one of its most popular software tools - Project Builder Plus (PB+), for free use and development by the community. The PB+ editor makes it easy to work on large trend data files from your desktop, adding Project-Haystack tagging and custom extensions in preparation for importing data into analytics and visualization applications.
PB+ accepts building operational data as raw XML and CSV files and exports Project-Haystack-compliant ZINC files. From the editor screen you can assign Haystack tags and extend tags with batch oriented tools. PB+ has options to communicate with NHaystack, Project-Haystack’s open-source Niagara AX module, and with oBIX (Open Building Information Exchange) compatible databases. These connectors can be extended to Modbus, BACnet, and other standard building protocols.
We are excited to announce that Constellation was presented with the first-ever, end-user award for adoption of Project Haystack technology. The award was presented at the Control Trends Awards event on January 29th in Las Vegas, to a packed house.
