About Project Haystack

Creating standards that enable software applications to automatically consume, interpret, analyze and present data from devices and equipment systems.

What is Project Haystack?

We live in a data-driven world. Today’s automation systems, equipment, metering systems, smart devices and IoT applications produce tremendous amounts of data.

Historically this data has been hard to organize and use across different applications because it is stored in many different formats; has inconsistent naming conventions and very limited data descriptors. In essence, it lacks information to describe the meaning of the data. Without meaning a time-consuming manual effort is required before data can be used in value-added applications.

The Project Haystack community has addressed this challenge by creating an easy to use “markup language” for describing the meaning of data. The open-source Project Haystack data tagging methodology is simple, flexible and

extensible, and can be used for virtually any type of device data. The Project Haystack standards enable software applications to automatically consume, interpret, analyze and present data from devices and equipment systems to unlock the value of the data.

Project Haystack streamlines the interchange of data and the techniques for managing, presenting and analyzing the vast amount of data generated by today’s smart devices and building and energy systems and the Internet of Things. There's more at www.project-haystack.org.

The Vision

Technology continues to drive rapid change in smart devices, smart buildings, energy management and operational efficiency. The most significant advances are driven not by a single company, but rather by collaboration and a community of companies creating open, best of breed technologies that work together through a range of open protocols and software interfaces. The work of the Project Haystack community addresses a critical gap that has limited the flow of data from smart devices to value-added applications, by making that data self-describing and easy to use.
Haystack Connect 2017 is the event that brings together the systems integrators, technology providers, A&E firms, OEM's and end users who are leading the way to advanced smart-device applications that are creating a more efficient, sustainable built environment and applications that delight users by streamlining the interoperation of the systems and devices that permeate our modern world.

Haystack Connect 2017 is THE place for these “communities” to come together to network, share, create synergy and generate new business opportunities.
